Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology specialises in clinical exercise interventions for people with a broad range of health issues, including those at risk of developing, or with existing, medical conditions and injuries.

Our interventions are exercise-based and include health and physical activity education, advice and support, and lifestyle modification with a strong focus on achieving behavioural change.

What is an Exercise Physiologist?

An Exercise Physiologist or "EP", is an allied health professional who specialises in the benefits of exercise to help patients get fitter for all around good health, or to treat patients with a medical condition through exercise.

They are knowledgeable about the effects that exercise has on the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and endocrine systems, and can prescribe a course of exercises for either fitness or rehabilitation, and advise on behavioural modification programs.

Exercise Physiologists can treat clients with medical conditions such as obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, asthma and cardiovascular diseases, as well as many other conditions.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not necessary to visit an Exercise Physiologist, however it is common for EP’s to work closely with other health professionals such as GP's to develop individualised exercise programs.

If you have been referred by your GP under an Enhanced Primary Care (ECP) Plan you may be eligible for Medicare Rebates. Alternatively, if you have private health insurance that covers Exercise Physiology (Extras Cover), you may be able to claim a rebate from your provider.

What types of conditions are treated?
